The Loveliest Liquid Face Lift

The thought of receiving face-lift results without a scalpel is certainly compelling. Depending upon the patient, a variety of products can be used to provide face-lift results in 30 minutes or less!
This patient received lifting in the cheek area (cheeks should “lift” rather than protrude) with Juvéderm Voluma®. Voluma® is a hyaluronic acid that has a unique ability to lift and also resist degradation by skin and pressure to maintain a lift of your natural skin and volume. Dysport® is a neurotoxin (similar to BOTOX) that will soften the lines of the frown and crow’s feet. Juvéderm Ultra is a finer hyaluronic acid that will gently plump the lips without making them appear like a trout pout. Finally, the marionette lines (lines heading toward the chin on either side of the mouth) were plumped and softened by Restylane Lyft®, a robust hyaluronic acid that gently removes the furrows and creases. The goal of the Liquid Face Lift is to be “Fresh and Rested”, not “Plumped and Pouty”.

Want The Perfect Pucker?

Recently, the entertainment and fashion industry have brought lips back to the forefront of fashion. From celebrities to Instagram models it seems that luscious lips are everywhere.  From bold lip colors to lip fillers, having full defined lips are all the rave whether you’re in West Palm Beach, NYC or across the globe.

Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with a pair of naturally beautiful lips. Over time nature, the sun, the elements, smoking and the aging process take their toll and the corners of the mouth begin to droop. The V-shaped area of the upper lip known as Cupid’s Bow begins to flatten out and lose its youthful fullness. Vertical wrinkles or Smoker’s Lines begin to appear, causing your lipstick to bleed. That once sensual look is gone or greatly diminished.

Relax! All is not lost.  Between lip fillers and injectables and lip augmentation you can have the perfect pucker.  Soft tissue fillers like Restylane®  and Juvéderm™ can help to give you more full, defined and soft luscious lips.

Juvederm comes from the trusted line of Juvederm fillers. It is intended to restore lost facial volume in the cheeks and lips, without negatively impacting your ability to achieve natural facial expressions. Juvederm injections typically last 6-12 months. Many patients return every 6 months for maintenance injections, in order to keep their smooth results.

Restylane Silk is a hyaluronic acid (HA) based filler that is intended for plumping, filling and defining the lips. It can also be used to fill the wrinkles around the mouth, further improving the appearance of the lips.  It typically lasts up to 6 months. Most clients schedule maintenance injections twice yearly to keep their results.

At Anushka Spa we can answer all your questions about lip fillers and injectables at a complimentary consultation. Dr. Marting DNP, ARNP is also a certified national speaker and trainer for Allergan (makers of Juvéderm family and Botox) and Galderma (makers of Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Dysport, and Sculptra and Restylane silk).

Beauty Through The Ages

There are radiant rewards to maintaining proper skincare throughout your adult life. The pursuit of a perfect complexion may be just at the end of a well thought out routine that evolves with age. The key is to start early and continue concentrating on maintaining a healthy skincare routine as your body and environment changes. While we are consummately searching for the fountain of youth, at times in the eye of a needle, there are plenty of highly advanced topical products and techniques that can help you avoid invasive anti-aging procedures and help your skin live a longer, healthier and happier life.

Tackling Your 20’s

It’s never too early to begin a youth-retaining skin regimen. You should be cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing your skin regularly to maintain the healthiest complexion – not just at night – but also in the morning. Choose products that are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins. During this time, when you may be more likely to be lurking late into the early morning hours rather than catching up on beauty sleep, don’t let your habits affect your beauty regimen: never go to sleep with your make up on! This bad behavior wreaks havoc on your skin, blocking pores with trapped oil and dirt leading to breakouts. Start searching for an aesthetician during this time to visit once a month. Like any other doctor, a licensed aesthetician will be able to give you a personal prescription for your very own skincare routine. Visiting them once a month will help to maintain the beauty of your skin and will help you to tackle challenges as they arise.

Thriving 30’s

Exfoliation becomes more essential at this stage, when you skin texture begins to change. The formation of lines appear at this time too, so exfoliating is especially important as this will help to reduce the appearance of those lines. Exfoliating will also help to diminish skin discolorations, which will become more prevalent as your skin is exposed to more years of environmental hazards. In addition, hormones and pregnancy can dramatically change your skins tone and texture during this time. Adopt products loaded with vitamins and collagen. Go to the experts and book a light peel at your doctor or aestheticians office to help firm your skin and reduce the appearance of lines.

Fabulous 40’s

In this stage, you need to be concerned with defending your skin from environmental influences and what has become the result of natural aging. You may notice that the lines around your eyes and mouth don’t disappear as they used to. Keep certain ingredients in mind that promote firmness, elasticity and collagen like retinol, retinyl palmitate, soy, wheat protein, marine algae and peptides. Ask your aesthetician about adding a growth factor to your routine to help slow down the aging of skin cells as well. For instant firming, check out techniques on how to give yourself a rejuvenating at-home facial massage. This technique will naturally help to firm the skin and tone up the underlying muscles and tissue. Plus, is feels incredibly wonderful, too!

Fruitful 50’s

When many people have decided that damage cannot be reversed, we defiantly proclaim that it is in your 50’s when some of sciences best anti-aging regimens can be used to rewind the clock and keep your skin looking youthful and resilient. Powerful anti-aging potions include ingredients such as peptides, retinoids, alpha hydroxy and amino acids, which can remove damage from the past and radically slow down the aging process. Add a peptide-rich serum under your SPF daily to help build collagen. A hyaluronic acid will help to lock in well needed moisture as well. At night, apply a retinoid before your moisturizer and ask your doctor or aesthetician about a product that contains phytoestrogen; an ingredient that helps with hormonal aging.

What we should all know, regardless of age, is that 80% of what makes us look older comes from sun damage. Protect your skin daily with at least an SPF 15 moisturizer which contains zinc or titanium oxide. If you don’t already have one, find an aesthetician you love who can give you the best advice for your skin. Finally, don’t smoke and keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water. These two things alone will help to keep your skin looking luminescent and youthful, while helping your body remain hydrated and healthy.

Forever You-th: Radical Anti-Aging that is Scientific, Safe & Stunning

Celebrities have long been apt to the latest youth-restoring treatments. In fact, many of us turn to them to vicariously test out the claims of new anti-aging techniques. But lately, something has changed. The over-puffy, super stretched faces of old have been replaced with remarkably beautiful and enviable results.

Experts Notate Madonna's Exquisitely Youthful FeaturesStars like Madonna, Demi Moore and Michelle Phieffer, who have all “allegedly” used aesthetic treatments for years, are looking decidedly stunning. Perhaps even better than their natural, younger selves. These ladies, each of which are well into their 50’s now, have somehow escaped the over-plumped, stretched cat-face appearance (think Joan Rivers) that has made stars look undoubtedly “old” for years. And we’re curious to know what this new treatment is.

In the grand scheme of things, injectables have only been around in our popular culture since the early 2000’s, when women were illuminated by the wrinkle-eliminating powers of BOTOX. Since then, the aesthetic industry has experienced an abundant growth of products and treatments to reduce the signs of aging. It’s taken time to figure out the right combination of treatments to produce natural-looking and safe treatments, but it appears we’ve gotten there.

The result has been dubbed “The Liquid Face Lift”, performed in under 30 minutes with no cutting or downtime from the use of temporary, reversible fillers. And the truth is, the results are outstanding. Never have patients had the opportunity to not only look younger, but qualified experts in the field are remodeling the faces of their patients to be more aesthetically beautiful.

Injectable Diagram: Liquid FaceliftTo explain the science behind this procedure, also known as the “Y-Lift”, it’s important to understand how the face atrophies over time. Dr. Bonnie Marting, Medical Director at the famed Anushka Cosmedical Centre, explains the various age signs. “The face thins out in 3 distinct ways with age: collagen naturally dissipates under the skin, muscles atrophy and bone density diminishes. The result is a major loss of volume around the cheekbones, sagging of the jawline, hollows around the eyes and an overall submission to gravity”, explains Dr. Marting.

The liquid facelift first utilizes the power of Voluma, a hyaluronic acid, by placing it strategically under the cheekbones to, as she says, “lift my patients up when time and gravity has brought them down”. Dr. Marting combines Voluma’s power of lift with the collagen-building agents found in Sculptra, a poly-L-lactic acid. This product effectively rejuvenates a person’s face from the inside out, over time building fresh, healthy collagen in places it has been lost to age.

The art, however, is combining these hero serums with the properly trained practitioner, who understands the scientific nature of beauty. About 10 years ago, scientists uncovered a few formulas for beauty. One is known as the divine ratio, or Phi (1 to 1.618) because it is found in so many naturally occurring benchmarks of beauty. The right practitioner will notice this when, for example, filling in the upper and lower lip. The second is the theory of Y, which identifies that the face is at it’s most ideal when there is an 81° curve between the center of the chin and outer edge of the jawline (this is also referenced as a “heart shaped” face).

Dr. Marting explains that “The liquid facelift lasts between 15 months and 2 years for most patients”, which long enough to be worth the $2,000-$3,000 cost but short enough to dissipate if a patient wants to pursue other anti-aging treatments that the future of science may hold.

Getting back to our celebrity muses, it certainly gives us a lot of confidence to try out the latest cosmedical cures knowing the results are remarkable at turning back time, as well as being reversible. Let’s not forget that just a few years ago the only option was a very invasive, irreversible facelift that was recognizable to practically anyone. Also, anti-aging injectables give us the chance to start turning back the clock at a much younger age than ever before. I’m confident we’ve embarked on a new generation of women and men who will all benefit from this discovery of “preventative aging”.

Vanity & Vice: Reclaiming Environmentally Damaged Skin

Our mother’s gave us a lot of advice when we were younger like “Don’t lay out in the sun” or “Don’t smoke cigarettes” because the long term effects caused irreversible damage to our internal and external organs like sun spots, cancer and signs of early aging. So we listened (for the most part). But we live in an industrially advanced era where exposure to harmful pollutants and even the sun’s rays, despite our efforts to combat the exposure, is striping us of the natural beauty we were born with. Then add in the occasional vice like a day at the beach or extra cosmo and suddenly you’re at war with your skin!girl-lounging-with-sunblock

But like modern day heroes, skincare scientists have trail blazed highly advanced methods to treat damaged skin, improve imperfections, reverse signs of aging and give you younger looking and acting skin.

At the Anushka Cosmedical Centre, we offer the most advanced methods to combat damaged skin from topical remedies to intensive restoring solutions. First you should identify what exactly you are in need of targeting. Indications of damaged skin include sunspots, rosacea, freckles, certain beauty marks and moles as well as tell-tale signs of aging like wrinkled or crepey lines and waxy skin.

Anushka’s Medical Director, Dr. Bonnie Marting, recommends a non-invasive laser treatment that will, in 1 sitting, dramatically reverse the appearance of sun damaged and aged skin. This is called the IPL Photorejuvenation Treatment ($350 Per Session) featuring the LimeLight® by Cutera. This versatile, state-of-the-art Intense Pulsed Light system can treat most skin types (types I through IV) to remove sun damage, age spots and vascular lesions to tighten and refine pores. Treatment areas include the face, face & neck, Décolleté, hands and arms. Series pricing available upon request.

For deeper restoration (clients requiring a more intense level of rejuvenation or wrinkle repair), Dr. Marting recommends the Pearl Treatment ($1,000 Per Treatment). Laser resurfacing has long been the gold standard treatment for uneven pigmentation and skin texture. The Pearl Laser will renew your skin’s surface with quick, visible results. Pearl treats fine lines on the face and neck, uneven skin texture and light and dark spots caused by sun damage. During a Pearl treatment, the top layer of the skin is treated with pulses of light. A portion of the epidermis (skin surface) is gently removed and a natural protective dressing is formed on the skin’s surface. Most patients feel a series of brief pinches during the treatments. After 3-4 days, the protective dressing peels off revealing new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath. The Pearl laser replaces the entire top sun-damaged layer of the skin with new healthy skin. Simultaneously, it sends heat to deeper layers of the skin stimulating new collagen growth, filling out and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. New collagen growth continues for 4-6 weeks post-treatment. The combination of new skin and decreased wrinkles results in a healthier, more youthful appearance.

Dr. Marting recommends a topical regimen following any of these treatments to maintain restored skin. First, she recommends using SkinMedica’s Lytera, a skin brightening and lightening treatment that helps diminish the appearance of dark spots and restores the radiance of your skin ($125 for 2 oz.).

It’s important to note that renewing your skin cells with the right topical regimen will help maintain skin’s youth because the production of new cell growth helps maintain the skin’s collagen and replaces dead surface cells. Retinol achieves this perfectly. Dr. Marting recommends Retinol Complex from SkinMedica ($90 1oz.) which will turn over skin cells and promote your skin’s youthful lifespan.

Finally, the most important element to add to your skincare regimen, especially after an IPL or Pearl treatment to maintain your results, is a high-performing SPF. We recommend TiZO2 Age Defying Fusion 40 SPF ($38.50 1.5oz) broad spectrum.

Preventing sun exposure and high levels of pollution from entering your body to begin with will help keep your skin looking and feeling youthful much longer than unprotected skin. So like mom said, start taking care of your skin health from a young age. You’ll really appreciate it in the years to come. Also, if you do receive a skin treatment, the new surface cells are extremely vulnerable to being damaged again, and to the same degree as before if the skin is not protected by a clinically proven SPF. So for those of us who have opted for revitalizing treatments, make sure to protect yourself properly after any skin renewing treatment by consulting your aesthetician.

Anushka’s Dr. Bonnie Marting Featured in Consultant: Delivering Exceptional Client Care & Outstanding Results.

This month, Anushka’s Dr. Bonnie Marting, DNP ARNP published a feature article in Consultant 360, a leading peer reviewed journal, about the Aesthetic Practice. Peer Reviewed journals in the medical community are revered for their high-level contributions from leading medical providers worldwide. Her article focuses on the rise in popularity of non-surgical medical procedures and anti-aging treatments that are increasing exponentially as more facilities and providers enter into the arena. Consultant 360 asked her to weigh in, as a leading provider in the industry, on how to deliver exceptional client care as well as outstanding results.

Injection-GirlDr. Marting points out many important details to consider and watch for when you are choosing an Aesthetic Practitioner. The first is to make sure your provider is spending enough time with you to understand your needs and desires. In this way, the provider can appropriately guide the client to discover what treatment will achieve the outcome they’re looking for as well as educate them to understand what proper treatments are right for them.

Your provider should also be asking you questions about your medical history, experience with other treatments and if you’ve had specific diseases. Many clients don’t understand that while it is not a “medical” appointment, often times your history can have an affect on what course of treatment is appropriate and safe for you.

Dr. Marting recommends taking some very useful before and after photos so you can view the results for yourself. Snap an image of your resting face, a big smile, a frown, and a quizzical look. Each of these will identify and demonstrate what areas should be of focus. A qualified professional will guide you through your unique prescription for facial perfection.

Dr. Marting educated us on everything you need to know about choosing the right provider to describing all of the modalities on the market to restore youth, including neuromodulators (to relax lines), Hyaluronic Acid (dermal fillers) and Poly-L-Lactic Acid (foundational structure recovery). Kybella

Kybella
Finally a non-surgical permanent fix for that double chin! In just two to four treatments (depending upon severity) the chin contour to the neck is restored to the near 90 degree angle. Kybella (FDA approved earlier this year) is a synthetic deoxycholic acid formulation. Deoxycholic acid is a substance that is a byproduct of intestinal bacteria, and is one of the mechanisms the body uses to break down dietary fat.
Kybella is injected into the fat pad under the chin. There is a brief period of swelling but after a few weeks, the results are becoming visible. Retreatment occurs in 4 to 6 weeks after the first treatment and the swelling is considerably less with subsequent treatment.

kybella-before-and-after-sml

On average women will require two treatments and men three to four.
As the fat is destroyed by the deoxycholic acid some inflammation is produced. This inflammation in turn causes a bit of skin tightening, most likely through some fibrosis. Because the fat cells are actually destroyed, the fat does not reappear, even if one gains weight. Therefore, results are permanent and all without surgery! Kybella also won the “2015 Breakthrough Award” from Allure magazine!
