Refyne & Defyne With Restylane

Introducing the Latest in the Ever-Growing Family of Restylane…

This past weekend I left my beautiful West Plam Beach for Dallas. I spent my time at the Galderma Headquarters getting to know the newest members of the Restylane family; Restylane Refyne® and Restylane Defyne®. While the Restylane family has been proven to be a fabulous dermal filler for decades, the addition of these products will not go unnoticed. Similar but with different crosslinking these two new gels are cohesive and extremely elastic, allowing for a continued smoothness even upon extreme facial animation. Think of a structure supported by a smooth but strong rubber band that stretches nicely but maintains it smoothness completely. Then it pulls back to its original soft form while obliterating lines and wrinkles. Its unique crosslinking leaves the product soft, smooth, and undetectable.
As we move along in life we lose the fine layers of fat directly beneath the skin. This fat covers a multitude of sins and makes the skin and face look flawless. As it dissipates the skin lies closer to the underlying muscles responsible for movement. That muscle begins to adhere to the skin making it resemble the muscle underneath, which is not terribly pretty. Restylane Refyne® or Defyne® can mimic the wonderful fat we used to have, once again making us look flawless!

Tired of Your Double Chin?

OK, yes, this one really is true. With over a year and a half of trials and studies, and now with specialized offices being trained in its use, Kybella® (Kythera Biopharmaceuticals) is the new hot issue both on the streets and on the web. Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) has been proven to destroy fat cells when placed under the chin in patients who possess a bit of extra fat there. Unlike liposuction, the fat cells are destroyed uniformly, rather than sucked out in one session that is nearly impossible to get even. Also unlike liposuction, the inflammatory process of the Kybella® treatment causes a bit of tissue fibrosis, which in turn seems to tighten the skin a bit. Sounds fabulous! But is there a downside?

Before going on to “realself” to get the scoop, read the whole story here. Kybella® is not a “magic injection”. Deoxycholic acid is a secondary bile acid which is a byproduct of intestinal bacteria in humans. It helps to break down dietary fat. Kybella’s deoxycholic acid is synthetically made, but identical to the human form. Therefore, it breaks down fat when placed in and around fat cells. Breaking down the fat is a process, as is the body’s normal debris removing mechanism. During this process a degree of inflammation occurs, which would partially explain the somewhat prolonged swelling. The company recommendations include a second (or third or fourth depending upon the individual) treatment in 28 days. Some of the physicians affiliated with the testing are suggesting two, maybe even three months between sessions. The increased time frame is to better evaluate the current result and therefore better judge the need for additional treatment.

Now, in the event that you have already gone on to realself and read some of the reviews, you will notice a common thread. First, as is common on that site, the poster was posting every day. This is not a treatment that you want to study the results of every day. The swelling persists for several weeks, and when the time comes for a follow-up treatment, there appears to be no difference from the pre-treatment. This is most likely because the swelling does persist a bit and it is really unknown how long the process takes, hence: wait another month or so. When treated at a 2 month interval, there is a noticeable difference between the pre-treatment photo and the current presentation. A few months after the second treatment, in many people there is an astounding difference.  Then there is the cost. The cost at the initial treatment is actually unknown. Your provider will attempt to make an educated guess as to how many treatments you will require and how much product is used at each session. For example a larger man will take more product than a small woman. Someone with more submental fat will take more sessions than someone with less.

So is there a downside? No, not if you are well informed before you proceed. Patients who have undergone the full treatment have been ecstatic!

Forever You-th: Radical Anti-Aging that is Scientific, Safe & Stunning

Celebrities have long been apt to the latest youth-restoring treatments. In fact, many of us turn to them to vicariously test out the claims of new anti-aging techniques. But lately, something has changed. The over-puffy, super stretched faces of old have been replaced with remarkably beautiful and enviable results.

Experts Notate Madonna's Exquisitely Youthful FeaturesStars like Madonna, Demi Moore and Michelle Phieffer, who have all “allegedly” used aesthetic treatments for years, are looking decidedly stunning. Perhaps even better than their natural, younger selves. These ladies, each of which are well into their 50’s now, have somehow escaped the over-plumped, stretched cat-face appearance (think Joan Rivers) that has made stars look undoubtedly “old” for years. And we’re curious to know what this new treatment is.

In the grand scheme of things, injectables have only been around in our popular culture since the early 2000’s, when women were illuminated by the wrinkle-eliminating powers of BOTOX. Since then, the aesthetic industry has experienced an abundant growth of products and treatments to reduce the signs of aging. It’s taken time to figure out the right combination of treatments to produce natural-looking and safe treatments, but it appears we’ve gotten there.

The result has been dubbed “The Liquid Face Lift”, performed in under 30 minutes with no cutting or downtime from the use of temporary, reversible fillers. And the truth is, the results are outstanding. Never have patients had the opportunity to not only look younger, but qualified experts in the field are remodeling the faces of their patients to be more aesthetically beautiful.

Injectable Diagram: Liquid FaceliftTo explain the science behind this procedure, also known as the “Y-Lift”, it’s important to understand how the face atrophies over time. Dr. Bonnie Marting, Medical Director at the famed Anushka Cosmedical Centre, explains the various age signs. “The face thins out in 3 distinct ways with age: collagen naturally dissipates under the skin, muscles atrophy and bone density diminishes. The result is a major loss of volume around the cheekbones, sagging of the jawline, hollows around the eyes and an overall submission to gravity”, explains Dr. Marting.

The liquid facelift first utilizes the power of Voluma, a hyaluronic acid, by placing it strategically under the cheekbones to, as she says, “lift my patients up when time and gravity has brought them down”. Dr. Marting combines Voluma’s power of lift with the collagen-building agents found in Sculptra, a poly-L-lactic acid. This product effectively rejuvenates a person’s face from the inside out, over time building fresh, healthy collagen in places it has been lost to age.

The art, however, is combining these hero serums with the properly trained practitioner, who understands the scientific nature of beauty. About 10 years ago, scientists uncovered a few formulas for beauty. One is known as the divine ratio, or Phi (1 to 1.618) because it is found in so many naturally occurring benchmarks of beauty. The right practitioner will notice this when, for example, filling in the upper and lower lip. The second is the theory of Y, which identifies that the face is at it’s most ideal when there is an 81° curve between the center of the chin and outer edge of the jawline (this is also referenced as a “heart shaped” face).

Dr. Marting explains that “The liquid facelift lasts between 15 months and 2 years for most patients”, which long enough to be worth the $2,000-$3,000 cost but short enough to dissipate if a patient wants to pursue other anti-aging treatments that the future of science may hold.

Getting back to our celebrity muses, it certainly gives us a lot of confidence to try out the latest cosmedical cures knowing the results are remarkable at turning back time, as well as being reversible. Let’s not forget that just a few years ago the only option was a very invasive, irreversible facelift that was recognizable to practically anyone. Also, anti-aging injectables give us the chance to start turning back the clock at a much younger age than ever before. I’m confident we’ve embarked on a new generation of women and men who will all benefit from this discovery of “preventative aging”.

Anushka’s Dr. Bonnie Marting Featured in Consultant: Delivering Exceptional Client Care & Outstanding Results.

This month, Anushka’s Dr. Bonnie Marting, DNP ARNP published a feature article in Consultant 360, a leading peer reviewed journal, about the Aesthetic Practice. Peer Reviewed journals in the medical community are revered for their high-level contributions from leading medical providers worldwide. Her article focuses on the rise in popularity of non-surgical medical procedures and anti-aging treatments that are increasing exponentially as more facilities and providers enter into the arena. Consultant 360 asked her to weigh in, as a leading provider in the industry, on how to deliver exceptional client care as well as outstanding results.

Injection-GirlDr. Marting points out many important details to consider and watch for when you are choosing an Aesthetic Practitioner. The first is to make sure your provider is spending enough time with you to understand your needs and desires. In this way, the provider can appropriately guide the client to discover what treatment will achieve the outcome they’re looking for as well as educate them to understand what proper treatments are right for them.

Your provider should also be asking you questions about your medical history, experience with other treatments and if you’ve had specific diseases. Many clients don’t understand that while it is not a “medical” appointment, often times your history can have an affect on what course of treatment is appropriate and safe for you.

Dr. Marting recommends taking some very useful before and after photos so you can view the results for yourself. Snap an image of your resting face, a big smile, a frown, and a quizzical look. Each of these will identify and demonstrate what areas should be of focus. A qualified professional will guide you through your unique prescription for facial perfection.

Dr. Marting educated us on everything you need to know about choosing the right provider to describing all of the modalities on the market to restore youth, including neuromodulators (to relax lines), Hyaluronic Acid (dermal fillers) and Poly-L-Lactic Acid (foundational structure recovery). Kybella

Kybella
Finally a non-surgical permanent fix for that double chin! In just two to four treatments (depending upon severity) the chin contour to the neck is restored to the near 90 degree angle. Kybella (FDA approved earlier this year) is a synthetic deoxycholic acid formulation. Deoxycholic acid is a substance that is a byproduct of intestinal bacteria, and is one of the mechanisms the body uses to break down dietary fat.
Kybella is injected into the fat pad under the chin. There is a brief period of swelling but after a few weeks, the results are becoming visible. Retreatment occurs in 4 to 6 weeks after the first treatment and the swelling is considerably less with subsequent treatment.

kybella-before-and-after-sml

On average women will require two treatments and men three to four.
As the fat is destroyed by the deoxycholic acid some inflammation is produced. This inflammation in turn causes a bit of skin tightening, most likely through some fibrosis. Because the fat cells are actually destroyed, the fat does not reappear, even if one gains weight. Therefore, results are permanent and all without surgery! Kybella also won the “2015 Breakthrough Award” from Allure magazine!
